[ARCHIVED] Structure Fire on Pepper Drive in El Cajon

On January 8, 2020 at 5:46 a.m., Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from El Cajon, assisted by crews from Lakeside Fire and San Miguel Fire, were dispatched to reports of a structure on fire in the 1600 block of Pepper Hill Drive in El Cajon. Fire crews arrived within six minutes to discover a single story single family dwelling with the garage on fire. Due to the heavy fire present, two additional engine companies were requested. There was one resident home at the time, and he was awoken by his dog as a result of the fire. Two additional dogs were successfully recused from the house. There were approximately 100 deceased snakes discovered in the garage.

Crews were able to control the fire within 20 minutes, with no extension to any nearby residences. The fire was confined to the garage and back wall, with smoke and heat damage to the house and attic. Red Cross was called in to assist three adults and three dogs that were displaced. The Humane Society was also called in to assist with two living tortoises, a 10’ snake and some rats.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. Estimated damage for the structure is $200,000 and contents is estimated at $150,000.
