El Cajon……At approximately 7:50 a.m. Monday morning, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from El Cajon, assisted by crews from San Miguel Fire, Santee Fire and Lakeside Fire, were dispatched to multiple reports of an apartment building on fire. Fire crews arrived within 5 minutes to discover a two-story apartment unit fully involved with fire. The fire extended from the first floor onto the second floor and also caught a neighboring apartment unit on fire. Due to the heavy fire present, a second alarm was called for, bringing an additional four engines, ladder truck, and chief officer. Crews were able to control the fire within twenty minutes. One elderly female suffered significant burns to her back along with smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. Estimated damage for the structure and contents is estimated at $500,000.
